MILWAUKEE – Freshman Hailey Malloy scored twice as the MSOE women's soccer team defeated Edgewood 3-0 Wednesday night at Viets Field in the NACC opener for both sides.
The Raiders (4-4, 1-0 NACC) outshot the Eagles (0-5-1, 0-1 NACC) 19-3 on the night in cruising to the victory.
MSOE dominated the midfield throughout the opening half, outshooting Edgewood 12-1 and putting seven shots on target. It did take until the 34th minute, however, for the Red & White to break through. Malloy got the Raiders on the board, taking a pass from sophomore Gabby Hoffman and driving a low shot to the far post from 20 yards out.
After halftime, the flow of the game became more open but MSOE continued to hold the momentum. The score remained 1-0 through some exciting moments, including three hit crossbars in a seven-minute span. Junior Jeray Riffel was denied by the bar in the 67th minute before the visitors rattled the woodwork at the other end five minutes later.
Senior Shelby Namen had run on to a loose ball from 30 yards out in the 74th minute, letting loose a laser that skipped off the top of the bar.
Malloy eventually came through with an insurance goal, turning in a cross from Gracie Horton with her head in the 82nd minute. Her head ball hit off the near post and rolled across the goal line before getting the push it needed into the goal from the other post.
Horton then tallied a score of her own in the 87th minute. Riffel rolled a corner kick through the box and Horton was the quickest to the ball and blasted it into the roof of the net to make it 3-0.
The Raiders outshot the Eagles 19-3 in posting their third-straight shutout and fourth in five games. Junior Abbie Lorenz got the start in goal and junior Allison Lessila played the second half. Neither keeper was called on to make a save.
MSOE returns to the field Saturday, hosting Illinois Tech at Viets Field.
