Women’s Track & Field Takes Fifth at Rittgers Invite

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Senior Lea Buchholz scored in three events and added another top-10 finish in leading the MSOE women's track & Field team at the Rittgers Invitational Saturday at Coe College.

The Raiders, who had been limited to just one team meet so far this season, scored 52 points for fifth place at the meet.

Buchholz posted the team's highest finish of the meet, taking second in the long jump with a distance of 16-7 1/4. Senior Desy Echevarria also scored in the event in sixth place with a jump of 16-1 1/2 and junior Rachel Ruona was ninth at 15-5. In the javelin, Buchholz was fourth with a throw of 101-4, just behind junior Maia Heineck in third place with a toss of 101-4. Junior Samantha Brooker threw 83-3 for 10th.

The 4x100m relay rounded out Buchholz's scoring performances, as she teamed with Echevarria, senior Jessica Bilskie, and freshman Michaela Baraglia for a time of 52.91, which was fourth.

Four Red & White athletes placed in the top 10 of the high jump, with Ruona, senior Rachel Lynde, and Buchholz each clearing 4-7. They took seventh, eighth, and ninth, respectively, based on attempts. Baraglia rounded out the top 10 in 10th at 4-5.

Bilskie scored in a pair of individual events at the meet. She ran 1:07.33 for third in the 400m hurdles and was sixth in the pole vault with a final height of 8-3 1/2. Echevarria also scored in the 400m hurdles, posting a time of 1:14.08 for seventh.

Four more Raiders scored over three events, including a pair in the 3000m steeplechase. Junior Kayla Thilges was sixth in the steeplechase with a time of 13:27.67 and freshman Lexi Maruga finished just back of her in seventh with a time of 13:43.69.

Junior Bianca Trombley finished sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 31-6 3/4 and Heineck added a second scoring performance in the throws with a seventh-place finish in the discus at 102-7.

Due to the crazy weather in Wisconsin this season, MSOE has just one more meet before the NACC Championships May 4 at Benedictine. The Raiders head to the Beloit Relays next Saturday.
