Ruona Leads Another Strong Showing for Triathlon

CHAMPAIGN, Illinois – Junior Rachel Ruona placed third overall to lead the MSOE triathlon to a second-place team finish at the Tri the Illini triathlon Sunday morning.

The Raiders placed second for the second-straight full team triathlon, scoring 16 points in the team standings. North Central was the top team with seven points while Concordia Wisconsin was third with 29. Millikin rounded out the team standings with 31 points.

Ruona was MSOE's top finisher again after taking seventh in the program's inaugural triathlon competition Sept. 3. Sunday, she posted a time of 1:10:30.6 to finish just about 1:15 off the winner's pace. She finished strong, posting the second-best bike time of 42:18.0 in the collegiate division and the third-best run time of 20:42.1.

Freshman Kendall Marks was also in the top 10, finishing seventh in 1:13:38.4. She excelled in the swim portion with a time of 4:38.7. It was the second-best time in the competition, just 0.02 seconds off the pace of the eventual runner-up.

Three more Raiders finished in the top 20 of the field, which featured 61 collegiate runners. Junior Samantha Brooker was 11th with a time of 1:17:31.5. Senior Alex Muench was just over a minute back at 1:18:59, taking 16th, and junior Maia Heineck was another minute back in 18th with a time of 1:19:58.9.

Sophomore Kiki Davis finished her first triathlon in 1:22.29.0 for 22nd place while freshman Morgan Traughber was 30th in 1:29:41.2. Sophomore Riley Rossbach also completed her first race, taking 38th in 1:32:07.5.

The Raiders will return to action Oct. 20 at the East Regional Qualifier in Huddleston, Virginia.
