MILWAUKEE – The MSOE women's volleyball team opened play at the MSOE Invitational with a four-set victory over Beloit 25-18, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21, Friday afternoon at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (4-3) followed that up with a hard-fought sweep at the hands of Central College, 25-16, 25-19, 25-20, in the final match of the evening.
Senior Rachel Lynde led the team against the Buccaneers with 16 kills. Sophomore Kaylie Butt tallied 10 kills and was one of three players to top 20 digs with 21. Sophomore setter Allie Laurent had a team-high 25 digs to go with seven kills and 40 assists.
For Beloit, Eva Laun-Smith paced the attack with 12 kills. Amanda Baran had 10 kills in the match.
MSOE got off to a tremendous start, hitting .316 in the opening set and finished the match with a .173 hitting percentage. It was the team's fourth-straight match setting a season-high for attacking.
The Dutch proved to be too much for the Raiders in the night cap, outhitting them .204 to .035 for the match.
The visitors had a fairly balanced attack, with five players finishing with 4-8 kills. Kylie Gerstein had a team-high eight kills.
The MSOE Invitational continues Saturday with six matches. The Raiders open the day at 10 a.m. against Maranatha and then take on Illinois Tech at 2 p.m.
