WHITEWATER, Wis. – The beginning of the season can only mean one thing for volleyball programs across the country: it's invitational time. MSOE women's volleyball was certainly no exception, heading to UW-Whitewater to take place in the aptly named UW-Whitewater Invitational. While the day wasn't completely full of great results, the Lady Raiders walked away with a 1-1 record in their first day of action.
MSOE – 0 (14, 20, 20)
#16 UW-Whitewater – 3 (25, 25, 25)
MSOE – 3 (20, 22, 25, 25, 15)
Carleton – 2 (25, 25, 16, 21, 3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first match was not a pretty one, with UW-Whitewater (2-0) easily winning each set during the duration. The Warhawks forced MSOE's (1-1) hand on numerous occasions, leading to a total hitting percentage of -.092. While neither team excelled in the service game, UW-W dominated in terms of net control. They slammed home 11 total blocks (3 solo, 8 assists), while the Red & White only managed a total of four block assists. 29 hitting errors against one of the top teams in the country won't allow you to make up much ground, as they fell in three straight.
MSOE could have easily folded up shop after the second set in their battle against Carleton (0-2), but that is not what this team is about. Down two sets to none, MSOE rallied back to win the next three straight to earn their first victory of the season. The Raiders turned things around and hit .141, assembling 16 aces along the way. The Red & White also led in kills (47-43), assists (42-34), and digs (65-54). Tied 2-2, MSOE collected their first win of the season by taking down the Knights 15-3, thanks in large part to a .385 attack percentage.
Last year the Lady Raiders went 4-2 in games that went to five sets. Having the willpower to battle back in these matches is key to any successful season, so it was nice to see the trend continue during their first five set opportunity during the 2019 campaign.
WHO'S ON DECK
