Bench, Free Throws Make Difference In Raiders Loss To Marian

MILWAUKEE – MSOE men's basketball welcomed the winless Marian Sabres to Hotchkin Arena on Saturday afternoon looking to move to 2-0 in NACC play. Unfortunately for the Raiders, the Sabres would move them to 1-1 as Marian locks down their first win of the season thanks to strong bench contributions.

Marian – 78
MSOE – 72

Even though just three points separated the two teams in each half, there were more factors that truly widened the gap between MSOE (3-3, 1-1 NACC) and Marian (1-5, 1-1 NACC) in this afternoon's ballgame. The Raiders shot 48 percent in the first half compared to the Sabres 42.9, but points from the charity stripe made the difference. In fact, free throws pretty much helped determine the winner of today's contest. The Red & White only hit 14 of their 23 attempts compared to Marian who only missed only one of their 18 shots from the line, 11 of which came in the second half. The last frame of action was where the Sabres won the game. They were able to keep the Raiders at bay with 53.8 shooting from the field, but their defense also played a big role. They limited MSOE to just one three pointer in the last 20 minutes and lowered their field goal percentage to 42.4. At no point were the Raiders out of contention in this one, but they just couldn't find any momentum to make a late run in the six point loss.

  • Marian had a full bench at their disposal and took advantage of it. They outscored the Raiders 30-6 in points off the bench.
  • There was a total of 11 lead changes, but MSOE only had the upper hand for 10:35 of clock time.
  • Josh Herzog got into foul trouble early but still led all players with 10 rebounds and five assits while scoring 19.

Points – Josh Herzog & Matthew Kirmse (19)
Rebounds – Josh Herzog (10)
Assists – Josh Herzog (5)
Steals – Michael Pitrof (4)
Blocks – Travis Ballard (2)

The Raiders will look to get back into the win column when they head across town to take on Wisconsin Lutheran. The Wednesday night game against the Warriors will tip off at 7:00 pm.
