MILWAUKEE – Freshman Rade Novakovich struck for the game-winner in the 81st minute to lift the MSOE men's soccer team past Rockford 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Viets Field.
The Raiders (8-2, 4-0 NACC) won their school-record eighth-straight game despite not being able to crack the formidable Regents (5-5-1, 1-3 NACC) defense.
Despite a 19-6 shot advantage for the game, the result hung in doubt until the final 10 minutes.
Junior Drew Baumann started the decisive play by deflecting a clearance attempt back in MSOE's attacking direction. Sophomore Joey Schauer got a foot on the ball and sprung Novakovich with a nifty one-touch through ball. Novakovich beat his defender and then an on-rushing keeper to tuck the ball in the far post for the game-winner.
The match was physical and end-to-end with the Red & White having the better of the chances. The defense was resolute in front of junior Patrick Grund, who made three saves to post his second-straight shutout.
The duo of Novakovich and Schauer have driven the offense during the winning streak as Novakovich has scored points in each of the last eight games and Schauer now has a seven-game scoring streak.
The Raiders will look to continue this run Wednesday against Marian.
