#13 Men’s Volleyball Breezes Past IIT in Three

MILWAUKEE – Junior Jake Christensen had 11 kills and freshman Ben Pung added 10 to lead the 13th-ranked MSOE men's volleyball team to an emphatic 25-19, 25-13, 25-14 victory over Illinois Tech Friday night at Hotchkin Arena.

The Raiders (5-3, 1-1 NACC) broke open a tight first set against the Scarlet Hawks (0-5, 0-1 NACC) and carried that momentum over into a dominant second set and beyond.

Christensen hit .381 in the match while Pung was extremely effective .562 with just one error in 15 swings. Pung added two of the team's nine aces in the match. Junior Spencer Mueller had four aces and four blocks.

Senior Quin Krisik tied a school record with his 131st career ace in the match, finishing with 23 assists and eight digs.

Lukasz Kupiec had nine kills for IIT and Easton Kays had eight as the duo accounted for 17-of-23 team kills on the night.

The match started off competitive with neither team really able to pull away. That lasted until late in the opening set when MSOE broke an 18-18 tie with seven of the final eight points of the game to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Raiders then hit .609 in a decisive second-set victory. They opened on a 15-5 run and never looked back. That momentum continued even into the third set as the hosts jumped out 12-4. IIT did pull back within 14-10 and was within four again at 16-12. The Red & White then took over again, this time finishing the match off with a 9-3 run.

Two days after committing 31 service errors, the Raiders cut that down to just 11. They also hit extremely efficient, finishing the night at .329 attacking. The team combined 36 kills and just 11 errors in 76 attacks. Meanwhile, 8.0 Red & White team blocks contributed to the Scarlet Hawks hitting just .038 for the match.

MSOE returns to the court with two matches Saturday, hosting Aurora at 1 p.m. and No. 15 UC Santa Cruz at 7 p.m.
