MILWAUKEE - Jacob Sirny (Brookfield, Wis./East) hit .591 and Quin Krisik (Itasca, Ill./Itasca) tallied 51 assists, as the #12 MSOE Raiders men's volleyball team was taken to the brink by Lakeland. The Red & White prevailed however by taking the last two sets to send the Hotchkin Arena faithful home happy, winning 3-2 against the Muskies on Wednesday evening.
The first set in tonight's contest was an all-out war, easily going into extra points. Lakeland (7-10, 3-7 NACC) led by as much as five halfway through the set before the Raiders went on a roll. Down 21-17, #12 MSOE (14-6, 8-2 NACC) won the next eight of 11 points to pull within one of the first frame victory. A back and forth battle ended up deciding the initial set winner, with the Muskies sealing the deal by the score of 31-29 thanks to back to back kills by their attackers.
While neither team hit above .200 in set two or three, both teams traded victories, starting with the Raiders 25-22 win. MSOE, after falling behind by five points once again, chipped away at their deficit, breaking a 20-20 tie to win 25-22. The pattern of playing from behind continued into the third frame, and while the Raiders would once again tie the set late at 20-20, five straight points off four Red & White attack errors put the Muskies up 2-1.
Shane Reid's crew said enough is enough and made sure that the Muskies would not be leaving the Kern Center with the upset win. Continuing with the theme of the night, set four saw the score tied eight different times before the Raiders pulled away for another close 25-23 win. The match headed to a decisive fifth set, which was easily won by MSOE. The Raiders went up 4-0 early, and never allowed Lakeland to take the lead, finally locking up their eighth conference win, and sixth in a row, 15-12.
Sirny led the Raiders in kills (15) and hitting percentage (.591), while Krisik paced the team with 51 assists and 17 digs. Brian Jones (Appleton, Wis./North) and Ben Pung (Loveland, Ohio/St. Xavier) each had two service aces, with Jones also leading the Red & White with four block assists.
MSOE will now play their next two on the road, first taking on Illinois Tech in Chicago next Friday. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
