MILWAUKEE – Seven players tallied at least nine points and the MSOE women's basketball team shot 57.1 percent from the field to set a school record for points in a 104-49 victory over Mount Mary Monday evening at the Bloechl Center.
The Raiders (1-2) topped 100 points for the first time on their way to their first win of the season.
Freshman Holly Denfeld led the way with 20 points and six rebounds, while senior Shannon Larson added 14 points, freshman Margaret Pugh scored 13 and freshman Marisa Gerstbrein finished with 11. Junior Marly Trier, sophomore Megan Kroll and freshman Corrine Sanford scored nine points each.
The game was close out of the gates, but that did not last long. After an old fashioned three-point play by Emily Barker pulled the Blue Angels (0-4) within 9-7, MSOE used an 18-0 run to break the game wide open. MMU scored its final basket of the first half to make it 37-18 at 6:45.
The Raiders finished the half on a 16-0 run to take a 53-18 lead into halftime. They then scored the first eight points of the second half to build their run to 24-0 and their lead to 61-18. The Red and White then continued to pull away down the stretch.
MSOE's 104 points eclipsed the previous school record of 94 points from a 94-38 victory over Maranatha during the 1993-94 season.
Ashley Leverenz led Mount Mary with 16 points, while Barker scored 11. The Red and White defense force the Blue Angels into 33 turnovers, coming away with 20 steals.
MSOE returns to action after Thanksgiving, opening NACC play with Rockford. The Raiders and Regents will tip off Saturday at the Kern Center at 4:15 p.m.
