Inferno Pulls Away From Raiders Late

MILWAUKEE – Alverno ended the game on a 16-2 run to overcome the MSOE women's basketball team and hand it a 67-54 loss Saturday evening at Reiman Gymnasium.

The Raiders (3-3, 2-1 NACC) took a 52-51 lead with 6:48 remaining, but could not overcome the Inferno's (5-1, 4-1 NACC) late run in seeing their three-game winning streak come to an end.

MSOE put three players in double-digits scoring. Freshman Holly Denfeld led the way with 12 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Corrine Sanford scored 11 points and junior Bre'Ana Strong added 10.

Junior Ali LoBue gave the Raiders their last lead at 52-51 with a jumper before Alverno answered back with a layup on its next possession and never looked back. The home team then hit three 3-pointers down the stretch, before converting on 5-of-6 free throws during the final minute.

MSOE struggled to end the Inferno run, hitting on just one of its final 11 field goal attempts over the final six-plus minutes.

The game was back and forth from the start with neither team pulling away. The score was 33-30 Alverno at halftime and the Raiders stayed close and tied the score at 48-48 on a Sanford three-pointer. Denfeld followed with a layup for a 50-48 lead, but the Inferno answered with a three leading into LoBue's final lead change in the visitor's favor.

The Raiders shot 38.8 percent on the night, hitting 4-of-15 three-point attempts and making just 12-of-20 at the free throw line. Alverno hit nine 3-pointers on 17 attempts (.529) and finished at 42.6 percent from the field.

Kristen Speerschneider hit six 3's to lead the Inferno with 19 points. Three other starters topped 10 points, with Devin Gorman scoring 12, Anna Boteva 11 and Ashey Berry 10.

MSOE returns to action Tuesday, traveling to Madison to take on Edgewood. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
