FOND DU LAC, Wisconsin – The MSOE women's basketball team shot 51.1 percent from the field and outscored Marian 20-11 in a decisive fourth quarter to pick up a 62-50 victory Saturday afternoon at Sadoff Gymnasium.
The Raiders (4-0, 2-0 NACC) did not trail until late in the third quarter before stepping on the gas and pulling away from the host Sabres (0-5, 0-3 NACC) down the stretch.
Senior Jamie Spanbauer hit on four more three-pointers to finish with a game-high 18 points in the game. Junior Kayla Barreto scored 14 points and senior Rachel Ruona chipped in eight points off the bench.
Rachel Serchen led Marian with 13 points and Paris Harris finished with 12.
MSOE led for the first 27:35 before a Brianna Horton layup gave the Sabres a brief lead at 39-38. The deficit lasted for 1:21 before junior Conner Bennett hit a jumper to put the team back ahead for good.
The score was just 42-39 heading into the fourth quarter when the Red & White rattled off eight points before the first MU field goal of the period to open a 50-40 lead. The scored was 55-48 when the Sabres started fouling in the final minute of regulation but Spanbauer and Barreto combined to go 7-for-8 at the free throw line to ice the game.
The Raiders shot over 50 percent for the second-straight game, adding a strong 6-for-14 clip from three-point range. Marian finished the game shooting 34 percent, including just 5-for-20 from three-point range.
MSOE is 4-0 to start a season for the first time in program history and will put that run on the line when its returns to the court Tuesday against Alverno.
