ELMHURST, Illinois - Freshman Helton Vandenbush took first place at 174 pounds and was one of three wrestlers to place for the MSOE wrestling team at the Al Hanke Invitational hosted by Elmhurst Saturday.
The Raiders finished ninth among 12 teams in the team standings, tallying 46.5 points.
Vandenbush won his second title of the season, posting four wins on the day. He opened his day with a 7-1 decision, followed by a 7-2 win. He then advanced to the first-place bout with a tough 5-4 victory. In the championship match, he emerged victorious 8-2. Vandenbush placed for the third time this season, including the season-opening Dan Gable Open where he won his weight.
Freshmen Drew Matticks and Duncan Heath also placed at the tournament, with Matticks settling for second place at 165 pounds and Heath taking fourth at 197. Matticks picked up an 8-0 shutout for a major decision in his first match, then scored an 8-2 win. After a 12-2 major decision booked his place in the title bout, he was edged 4-2 for top honors. He also placed for the third time in four tournaments this season.
Heath, meanwhile, rebounded from an opening loss to post back-to-back 8-4 victories in the consolation bracket. A medical forfeit advanced him to the third-place match, where he ended his day with a 14-4 defeat.
Three more Raiders picked up wins on the day, including junior Sam Rathburn, who picked up a 19-7 major decision and fall (2:49) during his day at 149 pounds. Junior Miro Stojanovic won a match at 184 pounds in his return from injury and junior Ryan Snyder also scored a win at 184 pounds.
MSOE returns to action Thursday with the first of two dual meets this week at UW-Oshkosh. The team then hosts Lakeland Friday evening at the Kern Center.
