TEMPE, Arizona – Freshman Kendall Marks took sixth and junior Rachel Ruona was seventh to lead the MSOE triathlon to Division III national runners-up at the Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championships Sunday morning at Arizona State University.
The Raiders finished with 22 team points to finish only behind North Central with six. Millikin tallied 33 points, followed by Concordia Wisconsin with 38 and Northern Vermont with 43.
Marks was the top MSOE triathlete for the second-straight race, completing the course in 1:14:06.3, just over nine seconds ahead of Ruona. Marks was the third athlete out of the water, in any Division, trailing only the top two Division III race finishers with a time of 10:47.8.
Meanwhile, Ruona made up significant ground after the water. In the bike portion, she posted the second-fastest Division III time of 35:20.2 before running the fastest DIII 5000m time by over a 72 seconds. Her run time of 21:34.0 cut into the other traithlete's leads considerably. Marks, meanwhile, had the second-best run time of 22:36.1.
Junior Sam Brooker was the team's third and final scorer, recording a time of 1:20:52.1. She placed 13th overall and scored in the 11th position.
Junior Maia Heineck and senior Alex Muench finished consecutively in 17th and 18th places, respectively. Heineck crossed the finish line in 1:22:49.1 and Muench was just over 50 seconds back in 1:23:40.0. Freshman Morgan Traughber took 21st place with a time of 1:24:59.1 and Rossbach placed 23rd at 1:27:27.8.
There were 30 Division III competitors from seven schools, including two which entered just two triathletes each and did not count in the team scoring.
